Cracker Jacksonby Betsy Byars |

After trying and falling to save his ex-babysitter, Alma, from being abused by her husband, Cracker Jackson takes matters into his own hands.
At first I didn't want to write the book. I thought it might be depressing. But I live in an area where there is a home for abused wives, and I couldn't get it out of my mind. So then I said to myself, Well, if I did write the book, I would have to have a lot of humor in it to make up for the tough subject matter, and if I did write the book, all of the abuse would have to take place off-stage, and if I did write the book, the girl couldn't be Cracker's mother or sister, it would have to be someone like a neighbor or a babysitter. And before I knew it, I was writing the book.
