In the late 1800’s, Amen McBee and her four sisters both fear and torment the reclusive and, maybe, sinister Mr. Tominski
I love getting a new
name – a name no writer I know has used before – names like Bingo and
Herculeah. So when I got the name
Amen, I was thrilled. I knew,
right away, how she got the name. She
had four older sisters whose names all begin with A, and her father, who’d
been hoping for a son said, “Amen.” A sister says,
“Papa, that’s not a name. That’s
something you say at the end of a pray.” “It is the end of
a prayer – a prayer for a son!” I decided right
away, that the book would have 26 chapters and that each would begin with a
letter of the alphabet. That’s
how I started the book – with 26 sheets of paper with a letter of the alphabet
at the top of each one.
