The Plot

When Sammy is left with his wild, strange grandfather, he wants to run away until he finds a wounded crane that needs help.

Betsy Says

The House of Wings began with a story in our Morgantown evening newspaper. A farmer, coming out of his barn, had been startled by a huge flying creature. The next night, another story. A huge flying creature flew in front of a woman's car on a country road. Now the newspaper was calling it the Morgantown monster.

Well, the Morgantown Monster turned out to be a sandhill crane that had been injured in migration. Most people lost interest in it then, but my interest was just beginning. And so was the book!
