Trouble Riverby Betsy Byars |

In order to escape an Indian raid, Dewey and his grandmother must escape down Trouble River on the raft that Dewey built.
I started writing Trouble River after our family had returned from a trip west. Out there it was easy to imagine pioneer days because so much of the land hadn't changed. Once I got Dewey and his grandmother and the dog on their way down the river, it was as if I were taking the trip with them. I didn't know what was going to happen to us. I didn't know we would face wolves and Indians and rapids, but I did realize the four of us were in a lot of trouble.
